Every once in a while I hear a recuiter say "Thank god you didn't use a MS resume template!" Another point that should be followed is consistancy in the format. Also check for 'balance' in the layout. As an example, take two copied of your resume, tack one upright on the wall and the other upside down - side by side. Like hanging pictures, do they look balanced? I would also read LOTS of resume (and cover letter) books to get ideas.
